Both of these circular paintings were originally part of a temporary on-site installation for an exhibition in 2008, Shake before Using. After the end of the exhibition, Grosse salvaged these two canvases, designating them as studio paintings. While the upper parts of both paintings show densely sprayed overlays of intense color, the lower parts reveal areas of the canvas marked by encrusted soil. In this way Grosse connects these paintings with elemental processes of creation whereby both exist side by side as one work. The border between painted surface and soiled canvas traverses boundaries between culture and nature, artist and the forces of life.
