In some of Katharina Grosse's paintings there are unexpected combinations of paint applied by brush and areas that have been sprayed. Sharply contoured geometric forms such as circles and stripes have been overlaid with closely packed, sprayed ribbons. The painting displays competing painterly manifestations, ranging from accurately delineated semi-transparent areas to diffuse gossamer webs. The spray paint makes the various layers vibrate, while the geometric structures anchor the composition to the surface of the painting. The green, yellow, red, black, and white that recur in various sections connect the different areas. Various synchronous movements interweave: the diagonal structure of the bands, the dancing cluster of circles descending from top to bottom, and the large area of sprayed ribboning that covers two-thirds of the painting.
