Katharina Grosse
Untitled, 1991
Oil on canvas, 200 × 300 cm

Veils of blue, red, green, and orange in differing degrees of transparency sweep across this canvas. They overlap in vertical and diagonal shapes of varying size that anticipate the irregular draped forms of Grosse’s later cut-out canvases. In this painting and the other from the early 1990s, underlying forms are visible beneath the surface due to the thin application of multiple layers of oil paint. The interactions resulting from these overlapping colors expand the limited palette of the unadulterated, unmixed paints into a broader range of hues. Visible brushstrokes also reveal that Grosse applied the paint in multiple directions.
