Viggo Johansen (1851–1935)
It was through his fellow students Karl Madsen and Michael Ancher that Viggo Johansen first came to Skagen in 1875. Unlike his colleagues, he painted domestic life. Women, children and intimate scenes were considered “feminine” subjects at the time. In 1888, he became a teacher at the new women’s school at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, praising his female students as being more diligent than male students.
