Käte Lassen (1880–1956)
The Flensburg painter Käte Lassen studied from 1898 to 1904 at the women’s academy of the Munich women artists’ society. Between 1904 and 1905 she travelled around Denmark, including Skagen. Danish landscapes and women by the sea featured in her work during the period. Later, she approached National Socialism with a mixture of detachment and conformity: she painted a portrait of Hitler on commission from a bank, and her depictions of her homeland were used for Nazi propaganda. At the same time, she faced increasing hostility from the Nazi regime as an artist.
