Marianne von Werefkin (1870–1938)
Marianne von Werefkin was of Russian nobility. In 1896, she gave up her own painting activities in Munich to support her partner, Alexej von Jawlensky: “So that he wouldn’t be jealous as an artist, I hid my art from him“. She began painting again in 1906. From 1918 onwards, she lived in Ascona, where she founded the Museo Comunale in 1922 with a collection of her own works.
