Louis Léopold Robert (1794–1835)
Already from 1818 onwards, the Swiss genre painter Louis Léopold Robert began portraying everyday life in southern Italy, particularly in Rome and Naples, including scenes with traditional costumes from Capri and Procida. His success brought him into contact with the highest European aristocratic circles; unhappily infatuated with Princess Charlotte Bonaparte, he committed suicide in Venice in 1835.
