Katharina Grosse
Untitled, 2006
Acrylic on canvas, 247 cm

This tondo (circular painting) is composed of wide bands of white, red, orange, and green paints that form a loose grid. While overall the upper and lower layers are generally distinguishable from each other, the specific layering is less distinct. The process of making this work included Grosse walking into the wet paint with rubber plates attached to the soles of her shoes. The marks of her shoes, which conceal her footprints, further dissolve the boundaries between the painted layers to reveal surface and subsurface concurrently. For Grosse, the activity of walking onto the canvas is also a way to connect painting and world.
