Katharina Grosse
Untitled, 2019
Acrylic on canvas, 240 × 161 cm
Familie Holle Hamburg

In the process of making this painting Grosse layered stencils at different times onto the canvas, creating well-defined borders within which colorful, heterogenous forms populate the image. The forms appear to be still undergoing mutations, especially those at the edges of the canvas. Although they intersect and overlap with the other shapes, overlaid on the white background like a collage, their rectilinear aspect nevertheless also invokes a framing device. This reminds us of the concept of painting as a window onto the world. The work thus prompts us to critically reconsider the relationship of art and world and how a frame functions as a separation.
