Katharina Grosse
Untitled, 2021
Acrylic on canvas, 258 × 138 × 82 cm

This painting consists of unstretched and slashed canvas pieces that are fastened together at the top so that they fall freely and in actual layers, some of them extending onto the floor. The fragments were sprayed with intensely saturated colors that stand in stark contrast to the larger and smaller voids between them—voids that reveal the white wall onto which the canvases are mounted, spaces that are and are not part of the multilayered artwork. The gaping incisions emphasize the moment of injury, while the white wall illuminated behind them simultaneously creates a link to the surrounding space.
