Katharina Grosse
Untitled, 1988
Oil on canvas, 120 × 150 cm

This work from 1988 forms the chronological starting point of the solo exhibition. It demonstrates how at the beginning of her career Katharina Grosse was working with oil paint and a nuanced application of paint. Deeper layers were removed again with a palette knife, so that only very thin remnants of the original paint application remain visible. The painting consists of different layers of modulated, shiny olive green that have been systematically applied with brush and spatula. The artist was experimenting with the interaction of foreground and background, the technique of translucent versus opaque layers of painting, and the alternating of vertically as well as horizontally aligned brushstrokes. The balance between the creative means leads to a dynamic and complex equilibrium.
