Katharina Grosse
Untitled, 1993
Oil on canvas, 130 × 170 cm

The bright lemon yellow has been given the leading role in this work. The vertical, sometimes slightly curved swathes develop different effects depending on both the adjacent and background color. A dark blue undercoat results in the yellow appearing greenish, its saturation and intensity stronger in contrast with the blue. When the underlying layer is white, the yellow appears much brighter. In creating such color relationships, Katharina Grosse regarded herself as a mediator between the individual colors: "When I paint, I am emotionally connected to overlapping movements of color. At that moment I feel like an arbiter between yellow and blue."
