Katharina Grosse
Untitled, 2009
Acrylic and soil on canvas, 201 × 135 cm

Painting light colors over a dark ground would normally be regarded in traditional painting as a depiction of light. Katharina Grosse exploits this functional context to create new color experiences in the form of cold, iridescent colors and a reversal of the logic of paint application. The canvas was first worked with a brush, then partially covered with earth and finally sprayed. Only in the organically shaped patches does the subsequent application of paint become tangible in thinly sprayed yellow, red, and blue lines, while the iridescent diagonal lines, which evoke depictions of light, come to rest along the lower edge of the painting. Since each color designates a specific level and time, which ultimately makes the manner in which the image was created comprehensible, the logical arrangement of past and present has been abandoned in favor of the simultaneous presence of temporal potentials.
