Katharina Grosse
Untitled, 2002
Acrylic on canvas, 269.2 × 203 cm

Flame-like orange-yellow and green swathes of color vertically traverse the image. The flickering orange casts green shadows that sometimes evoke fine dust in the gaps, but also run in dark lines and downward dripping streaks. This work was created in the early experimental phase of using spray paint during the 2000s. It reveals Katharina Grosse's interest in the superimposition of layers of paint. Although they are concealed in places, their presence a mere suggestion, they always remain visible. As a result the subject of this painting is not only the orange-yellow and green colors, but also the areas of contact where the colors interweave. Which color is forcing itself more into the foreground, and which is receding? Is the white background also perceived as a color or rather as a blank space? The artist is testing our perception with each new painterly decision.
