Katharina Grosse
Untitled, 2004
Oil on canvas, 150 × 250 cm

Color appears in Katharina Grosse's paintings less as material than as lucid form. The broad brushstrokes, emphatically applied vertically and horizontally, suggest a piece of fabric woven in weft and warp. Although several layers of paint are superimposed, the various elements are well separated from each other: light and dark green shine through from below, followed by orange, and finally a jagged field of magenta. The brush bristles spread on the canvas during the process of painting, creating a layer of color that remains transparent. The artist is interested in border zones. As a result, she considers areas in the painting that could be understood as separating as much as connecting. The contradictory can appear accentuated in such border zones, for example the painterly question of why the underpainting remains visible through the overpainting. It is something that is normally eliminated but now prompts a new optical struggle between the forces present in the painting.
