Katharina Grosse
Untitled, 2020
Acrylic on canvas and wood, 312.5 × 605 × 45 cm

For Katharina Grosse, color is at the center of her work. Various surfaces bring out colors in many different ways. Color looks different on nailed down driftwood than on stretched canvas. The artist also uses liquid acrylic paint as a kind of watercolor and enlarges her painterly gestures during the spraying process. Unlike painting with a brush, when she is spraying, she does not have to continually return her utensil to the palette to reload it with paint, and since the tool does not touch the surface, she can use it to paint unhindered over objects. In this work Grosse has mostly employed dark and cold colors in acrylic, which she applied unmixed. The bundles of vibrating color also evoke notions of social diversity as well as the differing lenses which can be used in looking at one and the same thing.
