Amy Sillman works at, and to an extent with, the border between abstract and figurative painting. In a 2010 interview she stated: “I broke up with Abstractionism.” Both figures and shapes are recognizable in some of her works. In Black Doorway (2011) a central black rectangle detaches itself from its green surroundings. In Song Cave (2017) and She/They (2021), on the other hand, uneasy figures inhabit worlds of vibrant color.
