Katharina Grosse
Untitled, 1994
Oil on canvas, 70 × 93 cm

To achieve the transparency of layers that are visible in many of her works, Grosse applied paint carefully in thin layers so that overlapping colors react to each other and blend optically in the eye of the viewer. Here, a brilliant red color field extends from the right to partially cover the irregular green form at the left, creating a transitional zone of indeterminate color in the middle. A crimson curve at the far right was painted over the bright red in a vertical orientation. Grosse’s experiment here tests the interaction of only a few bright, complementary colors. The forceful contrast is offset by the subtle textures left by the artist’s intricate brushwork.
