The exhibition’s title Marisa Merz. Ascoltare lo spazio / Listen to the Space unfolds its full meaning in this installation. The eye initially leaps from one square to the next, eventually apprehending the work in its entirety. From a distance, the installation resembles a musical notation system. The composition plays with notions of emptiness and abundance. The small squares, which resemble a medieval score’s musical notation, are interrupted by silence and breathing.
On closer inspection, the melody is overlaid by the materials used in the production of the work. The squares, finely knitted from copper wire are simply pinned to the wall, as if Marisa Merz wanted to give us an insight into the creative process. In this work, Merz elevated the humble and laborious activity of knitting to art.
