Vertical and horizontal bars in several hues cross one another in an interwoven geometric configuration. To create this work Grosse applied thin glazes of light color over dark, so that the dark remains just barely visible beneath. The complex interaction of transparent colors confounds an understanding of the sequence of layers. Close examination, however, reveals that the light blue block on the left was applied over green, the green over dark blue, and the dark blue over magenta. Grosse painted the entire work freehand, without the use of a straightedge. As a result, the seemingly straight perimeters of each form are, in fact, subtly curved. This unconstrained approach to line has the effect of further blurring the boundaries between the color fields.
