Katharina Grosse
Untitled, 1998
Acrylic on canvas, 280 × 206 cm

No paintbrush was used to create these amorphous forms in dark green. This is one of the earliest works in which Grosse experimented with a spray gun operated by a compressor, an industrial device for applying paint. Such an approach enabled the artist to remove any physical connection between her hand and the canvas support. Its tiny particles visible, the green acrylic paint is sprayed thinly in places where the dark underlayer shows through. In other areas Grosse sprayed the paint thickly to form opaque sections that drip with excess medium. While developing this new spraying technique, Grosse became as interested in the character of atomized color as she had been with the qualities of brushstroke and line.
