Tracey Rose
Toro Salvaje for Carlos Capelán (2016/2024)
The ‘Rainbow Wall’ was originally part of an installation that was shown for the first time in 2016. The double rainbow refers to the history of South Africa. After the country’s transition to democracy, South Africa – led by Nelson Mandela – was called the ‘Rainbow Nation’. The rainbow symbolized multicultural diversity, social inclusion, racial and gender equality. In Chinese mythology, the inverted colors of a double rainbow represent the transition of the soul from earth to heaven. Rose herself first witnessed a double rainbow in Johannesburg on the same day of Mandela’s death.
