Self-definition

Multiple names frequently exist for marginalized groups. One (or more) names that the marginalized group chooses for themselves is self-definition, while one (or more) names that the majority of society employs in talking about the marginalized group is a categorization.

Self-definition conveys a positive sense of togetherness (empowerment). Categorization, on the other hand, turns the marginalized group into others (othering). It frequently takes a long time for self-definitions to become established. An example of a self-definition would be person/people of color.
