Khoikhoi

Pastoralists and hunters who first inhabited southern Africa along the Orange River and the highlands of the western escarpment. Together with the San people, the Khoikhoi form the indigenous people of the Khoisan. The Khoikhoi initially resisted the Dutch, but eventually were wiped out. Survivors were absorbed into colonial society as servants and formed part of South Africa’s racially mixed population (Coloured). Sara Baartman was a descendant of the Khoikhoi people.
