Coloured

Generally refers to people of mixed race in a South African context. The term gained primacy in the 19th century and was an official racial classification under apartheid. This category is extremely fluid and not clearly defined, encompassing diverse peoples including Khoikhoi, free Blacks, and people of mixed descent. In the 1990s, Coloureds made up about 8% of the South African population, the largest number residing in the Western Cape. The term in now only commonly used in a South African context.
