Intersectionality

The term was formalized by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989 in a discussion around Black women’s employment in the US. Intersectionality rejects the notion of universal experiences of womanhood in favor of a more holistic assessment of how a person’s race, class, ethnicity, age, ability, sexuality, nationality, and religion can impact their individual experience of womanhood or gender, but also how these social inequalities intertwine with and shape one another.
